Legendary jockey Noel Callow, also known as ‘the King’, is under scrutiny for a racist incident where he was captured uttering offensive language in public. Callow, who has an impressive track record with over 2,000 victories, including five at the prestigious Group 1 level, and earnings exceeding £20 million in Australia, is now facing an investigation.
This controversy comes on the heels of Callow serving a two-month suspension due to a physical altercation with another jockey earlier this year, which resulted in him suffering a concussion. The incident, initiated by the 50-year-old jockey in May, has raised concerns within the racing community.
According to reports from the Australian racing outlet Racenet, footage allegedly taken last year showing Callow engaging with an indigenous man is currently under review by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission. The Commission has confirmed that they are investigating the video that recently came to their attention.
In the video clips, Callow can be heard making derogatory remarks towards the man, questioning his hygiene and living conditions. Despite the man’s refusal of Callow’s offer of food, Callow is heard suggesting that he could buy the man a beer if he cleans up. The exchange escalates with Callow encouraging the man to bathe in a nearby creek and using offensive language.
Additionally, another clip shows Callow riding his bike on the sidewalk, making inappropriate comments towards pedestrians. After being warned by a pedestrian, Callow responds with offensive language, causing further controversy.
The situation has sparked outrage and prompted investigations into Callow’s behavior, shedding light on the need for accountability and respect within the racing industry.
