Israel has carried out a targeted strike on Hamas’ leadership in Qatar, disrupting prospects for a peace agreement in Gaza. Following the detonation of several large explosions in Doha, Qatar issued a strong condemnation of Israel, labeling the attack as criminal. Doha has been a key location for peace negotiations involving Hamas leaders, who previously felt secure in the diplomatic hub.
The attack in Doha resulted in at least five explosions, causing significant disruptions and prompting emergency responses. The US embassy in Doha issued urgent directives for citizens to seek shelter during the assault, which occurred in the afternoon. The targeted individuals included senior Hamas figures who have been pivotal in peace discussions facilitated by the US and Qatar.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, from the far-right, praised the strike on Doha as a demonstration that terrorists will not be immune anywhere globally. He lauded the operation as the “right decision” with precise execution by Israeli military and intelligence services. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office took responsibility for the operation, emphasizing its independent nature.
This marked the first instance of Israel launching such an operation in Qatar, with Hamas asserting that none of its leaders were killed in the attack. The air strikes on peaceful Qatar occurred amidst heightened Israeli military activities targeting Hamas in Gaza City. Israel’s military clarified that the explosions witnessed in Doha were part of an attempted assassination of Hamas leaders and senior officials.
Israel’s ongoing military actions in various regions, including Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and the West Bank, have intensified. The Israeli military disclosed that the targeted attack aimed at the top Hamas leadership responsible for past terrorist activities and hostilities against Israel, including the recent massacre. Precautions were taken to minimize collateral damage through the use of precision weaponry and intelligence.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, strongly denounced the attack on residential buildings housing Hamas members, emphasizing its breach of international laws and norms. Qatar vowed to investigate the incident thoroughly and address any threats to its security and sovereignty. The country condemned Israel’s actions and pledged to take appropriate measures to safeguard its residents and regional stability.
