Irish-American Mobster Whitey Bulger Brutally Murdered

Date:

Infamous Irish-American mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, known for his criminal activities, met a brutal end at 89 years old in a high-security prison. He was viciously murdered on October 30, 2018, beaten to death with a padlock concealed in a sock. The attack left him severely disfigured, with almost gouged-out eyes and a mutilated tongue.

The assailants strategically avoided surveillance cameras while assaulting Bulger, pushing his wheelchair into a secluded area. A source linked to the investigation revealed to the New York Times that the attackers had severely beaten Bulger beyond recognition.

Bulger’s demise was attributed to his betrayal of fellow criminals. As the head of Boston’s Winter Hill gang, he had violated the underworld’s code by informing on his associates. This act ultimately led to his tragic fate in prison.

Following his transfer to the US Penitentiary Hazelton in West Virginia, Bulger, who had been an FBI informant since 1975, maintained a close relationship with agent John Connolly. Connolly’s collaboration with Bulger allowed the mobster to operate freely in exchange for intelligence on criminal activities.

Bulger’s ties with Connolly and his brother, politician Billy Bulger, shielded him from law enforcement for years. He provided crucial information on the Patriarca crime family to the FBI, contributing to their downfall.

Despite speculation that Bulger saw his collaboration with the FBI as a strategic move, his status as an informant tarnished his reputation within criminal circles. He evaded capture for over 15 years until his arrest in 2011 at the age of 81.

In 2011, Kevin Weeks, a close associate of Bulger, expressed astonishment at Bulger’s sudden cooperation post-arrest, noting a significant change in his demeanor.

Bulger’s criminal past caught up with him in prison, where he was murdered by fellow inmate Fotios “Freddy” Geas, a hitman known for his disdain towards informants. Geas was subsequently charged, along with two others, for Bulger’s killing.

Geas, along with his accomplices, accepted plea agreements in May 2024. Geas was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in connection with Bulger’s death in September of the same year.

Former Boston police commissioner Ed Davis commented on the murder, expressing surprise not at the act itself but at the lack of prevention measures that led to Bulger’s demise.
