Recent reports, such as those from the BBC, shed light on the arrests made for allowing women without hijabs to partake in marathons in Iran, illustrating the ongoing challenges faced by female athletes in the country.
Jahankha shared her thwarted attempts at running in Tehran during her 20s due to the restrictive environment. However, her passion for the sport never waned, and after relocating to St. John’s and connecting with fellow runners through social media, she reignited her interest in running. Finding a supportive coach and beginner group, Jahankha appreciates the welcoming environment that has enabled her to pursue her running goals.
Amidst ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha views running as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety, integrating it as a vital component of her daily life. Recently participating in a Pride race with her family, Jahankha looks forward to another 5-kilometer race on August 16. Expressing gratitude to Canada for providing her with opportunities she lacked in Iran, Jahankha emphasizes the newfound sense of freedom and happiness she experiences in her current environment.
