“Indigenous Leader Disappointed by Alberta’s Absence at Treaty 6 Event”

Date:

An Indigenous leader in Alberta expressed disappointment with the provincial government’s lack of representation at an event marking the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6. Joey Pete, the grand chief of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations, emphasized the need for respect and dialogue for true reconciliation.

The commemorative event, organized by the City of Edmonton and Mayor Andrew Knack, featured ceremonies, drumming, dancing, and the raising of the Treaty 6 flag. Various government officials, including federal Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski and Alberta Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani, delivered speeches reaffirming their commitment to the treaty.

While Alberta’s Indigenous Relations Minister Rajan Sawhney was absent from the event, her office stated her dedication to maintaining strong relationships with Indigenous communities. Despite this assurance, Indigenous leaders like Pete expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of meaningful engagement on pressing issues such as the upcoming provincial referendum and pipeline development.

Indigenous leaders and elected officials highlighted the importance of honoring treaties and fostering meaningful relationships, especially in light of current challenges like separatism movements. The event in Edmonton marked the beginning of a series of planned activities to commemorate the historic treaty signing, with more events scheduled in the coming days.
