Authorities in Mexico have uncovered a hidden burial ground close to the popular tourist destination of Cancun, where the bodies of at least 16 individuals have been recovered.
On November 10, officials in Mexico disclosed the finding of a property utilized as a secret cemetery in a town neighboring Cancun along the Caribbean coast.
The authorities have identified the remains of 16 individuals, but their identities are still unknown at this time.
Authorities believe there may be more victims, as they continue to investigate five areas of interest forensically, as mentioned by Quintana Roo’s attorney general, Raciel Lopez Salazar.
The site was situated in Leona Vicario, a town located 26 miles to the west of Cancun.
The skeletal remains were found dispersed across 10 different locations, concealed under layers of cement and quicklime.
Mexico has a staggering number of over 133,000 reported missing persons, with the majority disappearing over the past two decades.
While discoveries of clandestine burials are not uncommon in regions like Jalisco, Michoacan, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz, they are unusual in Quintana Roo, which is renowned for its tourism industry.
