The Broadway revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, featuring Big Brother alum Marisha Wallace, will conclude earlier than scheduled due to lead actor Billy Porter’s illness and a legal battle with an investor. The final performance, initially set for October 19, will now take place on September 21 at the August Wilson Theatre. Porter’s absence is a result of being hospitalized with a serious case of sepsis, with hopes for a full recovery according to his doctors.
In light of Porter’s health condition, Marty Lauter and David Merino will step in as understudies to portray the Emcee during the remaining shows. Producer Adam Speers expressed regret over the situation, acknowledging Porter’s exceptional performance and the significance of bringing Cabaret to Broadway.
Despite a successful run of 592 performances, attendance declined notably during the summer months. Additionally, the production faced legal troubles as investor James Lorenzo Walker Jr. filed a lawsuit on September 4, alleging fraud and financial mismanagement related to the $24 million revival. Walker claimed that despite substantial earnings exceeding $90 million, profits were not distributed to investors due to alleged financial discrepancies and lack of transparency from the producers.
In response, the producers refuted the accusations, asserting that the production had not yet reached a stage to provide returns to investors but offered to share financial records for clarity. They expressed willingness to engage in discussions with Walker to address his concerns amicably, criticizing the lawsuit as lacking merit.
As the legal dispute unfolds, all claims remain allegations at this point. The show’s closure and legal challenges mark the conclusion of a chapter for the Cabaret revival on Broadway.
