Hamilton is set to host a vibrant celebration of hip-hop culture this weekend, with streets transforming into a stage for dancers from various regions. The Outdoor Dance Series, named 73 ‘Til Infinity and initiated in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, is back for its fourth year. The event, offering dance performances, workshops, a block party, and an all-styles dance battle, aims to honor street dance culture.
According to Josh Taylor, the artistic director and owner of Defining Movement Dance and the curator of 73 ‘Til Infinity, the event spotlights dancers and various dance styles, shifting the focus from traditional music acts to the dance community.
Sisters Claris and Amelia Menjivar, who have been part of 73 ‘Til Infinity since its inception, emphasize the importance of understanding the roots and history of hip-hop culture. They highlight how hip-hop, originating from Black and marginalized communities, symbolizes resilience and unity in the face of oppression.
The upcoming weekend will showcase street-dance styles like breaking, locking, popping, and whacking, providing a platform for dancers to engage with the culture and history behind these art forms. The event will feature a block party on Friday and an all-styles dance battle on Saturday, judged by renowned street dancer Suga Pop.
Taylor acknowledges Hamilton’s vibrant dance community, noting its close-knit and supportive nature. Despite being overshadowed by Toronto, Hamilton boasts a diverse dance scene encompassing various genres like street dance, salsa, and commercial hip-hop. The inclusive and welcoming environment of the city’s dance community is a key focus of 73 ‘Til Infinity, promoting cultural appreciation and participation for all attendees.
