“Grenfell Tower Survivor Files Lawsuit for Compensation”

Date:

A young woman deeply affected by the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire has initiated a significant legal action that may lead to compensation for traumatized individuals. Johara Menacer, who was only 13 at the time of the fire in 2017, is now 21 years old and has filed a personal injury lawsuit against the Kensington and Chelsea council and several companies involved in the tower’s construction.

Court documents obtained by the Mirror reveal that Johara has filed a claim in the High Court against the council’s Tenant Management Organization, as well as the architects and cladding firm Arconic. The lawsuit also includes Whirlpool, the Home Office, and the London Fire Commissioner as defendants.

Following the fire, Johara, along with another survivor, recorded a tribute song called Fire In Grenfell to honor the victims. She actively engaged with Young Grenfell, a support group that provided therapy through discussions, art, and writing to cope with the loss of friends.

Reflecting on the tragedy and its aftermath, Johara expressed how she internalized her emotions for a long time before seeking help. Having lived in close proximity to the tower and having lost friends in the fire, she shared her struggles with the ongoing trauma.

Despite the challenges, Johara continued attending school in temporary facilities after the fire damaged Kensington Aldridge Academy. The presence of other survivors in the school made it difficult for her to focus on studies, especially during exams.

In the aftermath of the fire, thousands of individuals in North Kensington were screened for trauma, with many, including hundreds of children, receiving treatment for grief and psychological distress.

In a legal development, a High Court judge in 2022 held the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Tenant Management Organization accountable for the fatalities in the fire. Subsequently, a landmark civil settlement was reached in the following year involving 900 claimants comprising bereaved families, survivors, and residents with the Tenant Management Organization.

This legal action signifies a significant step toward seeking justice and closure for the victims and survivors affected by the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.
