Nearly six months have passed since Microsoft stopped providing official support for Windows 10. This move has left millions of laptops without crucial security updates, making them more vulnerable to cyber threats and malware that can compromise data. While some newer devices can be upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, putting users in a challenging position.
Users facing this dilemma have a few options: they can continue using their unsupported laptops, opt to pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in a new device that comes with Windows 11 pre-installed.
For those looking for an alternative solution to prolong the life of older PCs and prevent them from becoming electronic waste, Google has partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes old laptops with ChromeOS Flex software.
ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system designed to work on various older computers, effectively turning them into devices similar to Chromebooks. Once installed, users can access services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop.
While ChromeOS Flex has been available as a free download from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The high demand for these kits has led to them being temporarily out of stock.
In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a significant moment for hundreds of millions of computers as Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, leaving these computers at risk of becoming obsolete. This presented users with a tough choice: spend money on a new device or continue using an insecure and outdated one.”
Google’s partnership with Back Market offers the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit for around £3, with the USB stick being reusable to reduce electronic waste further. The high demand for the kits is evident as they are currently unavailable due to stock depletion.
Apart from breathing new life into old laptops, Google highlights that ChromeOS Flex can also have positive environmental impacts. Google mentioned, “The production of a new laptop contributes significantly to its carbon footprint.”
“ChromeOS Flex extends the lifespan of existing devices, keeping them out of landfills and reducing the emissions associated with manufacturing new devices. Additionally, ChromeOS is more energy-efficient, consuming 19% less energy on average compared to similar systems.”
