“Get Ready for Spectacular Perseid Meteor Shower!”

Date:

August brings the spectacular Perseid meteor shower, considered one of the best of the year due to its abundance of bright meteors and favorable viewing conditions. This year, the peak of the Perseids coincides with a new moon, enhancing visibility without interference from moonlight.

Peter Brown, a Canada Research Chair in Meteor Astronomy, anticipates a noteworthy display of Earth-grazing meteors during this year’s Perseids event. These meteors enter the atmosphere and swiftly return to space, creating a breathtaking sight.

The peak viewing night for the Perseids is expected on Aug. 12-13, with the shower reaching its climax around midnight Eastern Daylight Time. While conditions may not allow for the ideal view of 120 meteors per hour, observers can still expect to witness a significant number of bright meteors.

To maximize meteor sightings, viewers are advised to seek dark-sky locations and avoid using mobile phones to allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness. The radiant point of the Perseid meteors lies in the constellation Perseus, visible low in the eastern sky after sunset.

Aside from the Perseids, two other major meteor showers, the southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids, are active, offering additional opportunities to witness shooting stars. Additionally, the minor Kappa Cygnids shower and sporadic meteors contribute to what Peter Brown describes as “meteor Christmas.”

In conjunction with the Perseid meteor shower, a partial solar eclipse is set to occur on Aug. 12. While the total eclipse will not be visible from Canada, regions in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small part of Portugal will experience it. Viewers in Canada can observe the moon partially obscuring the sun, with the extent of visibility varying by location.

For safe viewing of the partial solar eclipse, approved solar eclipse glasses are recommended to protect the eyes. Astronomer Paul Delaney from York University emphasizes the significance of witnessing celestial interactions during a solar eclipse, describing the experience as humbling.
