New Zealand authorities are facing a puzzling situation following the dramatic conclusion to a four-year search for fugitive father Tom Phillips. After being apprehended and fatally shot by police in western Waikato, shoeboxes were discovered on Phillips’ quad bike. The arrest occurred after reports of an armed robbery at a Piopio farm supply store, where Phillips had been evading capture with his three children – Ember, Maverick, and Jayda. Jayda was present during the shooting, while her younger siblings were found safe at a nearby campsite a couple of hours later.
Police Commissioner Richard Chambers expressed interest in the shoeboxes found, linking them to Phillips’ suspected involvement in various burglaries. Investigations are underway to trace the origins of the equipment and clothing contained in the boxes. Images from the campsite, located near the shooting scene, depicted the challenging living conditions the children endured, with makeshift arrangements for survival.
Commissioner Chambers confirmed the recovery of multiple firearms at the campsite, raising questions about how Phillips obtained them. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover any potential accomplices. Police Minister Mark Mitchell highlighted the importance of the children’s well-being and ensuring they receive the necessary support for recovery.
Oranga Tamariki regional commissioner Warwick Morehu provided reassurance that the children are settling well under the circumstances and are receiving appropriate care and support. The children went missing with their father in December 2021 and were last seen in October 2024, believed to have been living off the grid since then.
