At the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, teams from 10 regions are participating, with one region transforming the provincial event into an international affair. St. Pierre and Miquelon, the French islands situated off Newfoundland’s south coast, have brought both boys and girls soccer teams to Corner Brook for the Games.
The boys’ team commenced their tournament on Thursday, facing a 1-0 defeat against Team Eastern. Soccer holds significant importance in St. Pierre, with players relishing the opportunity to compete in Newfoundland and broaden their horizons.
Arthur Champdoizeau, 15, expressed, “We don’t encounter much competition in St. Pierre. Participating in the N.L. Games in Corner Brook is a valuable experience for us and our team.” Antony Cronsteadt, aged 14, highlighted that the island has three minor soccer teams, uniting for this tournament due to limited playing options.
Team manager Guillaume Grasset emphasized the importance of events like the N.L. Games in player development, fostering new friendships, and creating lasting memories beyond the island’s shores. The Games’ closing ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, offering a platform for the players to share their perspectives and showcase their skills.
