Former First Lady of Nepal Dies in Tragic Fire amid Social Media Protests

Date:

Nepal’s former First Lady has tragically passed away as a result of a fire set by protesters who surrounded her residence.

Protests erupted in Nepal following the recent government decision to block access to 26 social media platforms, including major ones like Facebook and YouTube.

Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the former first lady and wife of ex-Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, was fatally burned inside her home during the violent incident.

Her family rushed Mrs. Chitrakar to Kirtipur Burn Hospital for urgent medical care, but she succumbed to her severe injuries.

Local authorities are currently probing the circumstances of the fire that led to this tragic event.

The escalating clashes between demonstrators and security forces have resulted in 19 fatalities and numerous injuries in recent days.

Security personnel have resorted to using water cannons, batons, and rubber bullets to suppress the unrest.

Although the government has since reversed the social media ban that initially sparked the protests, discontent with the authorities in Nepal seems to run much deeper, as per reports from the BBC.
