Tim Westwood, a former BBC Radio 1 presenter, has appeared in court facing charges of rape and sexual assault involving seven women, some of whom were 17 years old. The Metropolitan Police has charged Westwood with four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault, with the alleged incidents spanning from 1983 to 2016.
Allegations include indecent assault on a 17-year-old girl in Fulham in 1983, indecent assault on a woman in her 20s in Vauxhall in 1986, and raping and indecently assaulting a woman aged 17-18 in London between 1995 and 1996. Westwood, residing in Westminster, is also accused of raping and indecently assaulting a woman aged 17-18 between 2000 and 2001, as well as raping a woman in her 20s in 2010.
Furthermore, Westwood faces allegations of sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s in Stroud in 2010 and another woman in her 20s in Finchley in 2016. Despite denying all allegations of inappropriate behavior, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy emphasized the importance of reporting such allegations and assured support for the women involved.
Following a review, the BBC Board issued an apology for not taking sufficient action upon hearing concerns regarding Westwood’s alleged behavior. Westwood stepped down from his show on Global’s Capital Xtra in April 2022 and departed from Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra in 2013 after a long tenure. Additionally, he hosted the MTV UK show “Pimp My Ride UK” from 2005 to 2007.
