Fatal Lion Attacks Shock Tourists at Nigerian Zoo

Date:

Tourists were horrified as a zookeeper was fatally attacked by a lion due to a critical error. Babaji Daule, a 35-year-old lion handler, was demonstrating the big cat’s feeding routine at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Wildlife Park in Abeokuta, Nigeria, on September 28, 2024, when the tragic incident occurred.

Daule, who felt at ease with the lion, made the fatal mistake of leaving the safety gate open, leading to the lion’s sudden attack that resulted in fatal neck injuries, causing instant death. Park staff swiftly intervened by euthanizing the lion to prevent further harm, witnessed by shocked visitors exploring the wildlife section of the library complex, a popular tourist destination in Abeokuta.

Authorities mentioned uncertainty regarding Daule’s authorization to guide guests into the enclosure, especially during off-hours. Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola criticized Daule for carelessly failing to secure the enclosure properly before approaching the lion for feeding, allowing the lion to escape and fatally injure Daule. An investigation was initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The park management clarified that the attack occurred outside the sanctioned feeding schedule and confirmed that Daule’s body was transferred to the local mortuary for further procedures. The OOPL extended condolences to Daule’s family, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring safety for both staff and visitors alongside animal welfare.

In a separate incident months later, a German businessman and philanthropist, Bernd Kebbel, 59, lost his life to a lioness during a safari trip in Namibia. Kebbel, camping by Hoanib River with his wife and friends on May 30, 2025, was fatally attacked by the lioness while stepping out of his tent in the morning. Despite attempts to scare the lioness away, Kebbel succumbed to his injuries.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism later confirmed that the lioness involved in the attack was euthanized. Kebbel, known for owning the Offroad Centre specializing in off-road vehicle supplies, faced a tragic end during the unfortunate encounter.
