An incident at Miami International Airport on Sunday involved an Amazon cargo plane veering off the runway, leading to a tragic outcome. The aircraft, arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, overran the runway at around 2 p.m. ET. Authorities confirmed that the accident resulted in the loss of five lives, with three individuals in critical condition and two others sustaining less severe injuries.
Miami-Dade County officials stated that it was premature to ascertain whether the fatalities occurred among those onboard the plane or individuals in the vehicles impacted by the plane. The crash resulted in thick black smoke rising into the air, causing the pilot, copilot, and some car occupants to be trapped. Emergency crews also encountered a person trapped under a vehicle and worked to contain a fuel leak from the plane for several hours after the incident.
Responding to the scene, over 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units battled the fire engulfing the aircraft and tended to the injured. The Prime Air plane, operated by cargo carrier 21 Air, came to a stop near two semi-trucks, visibly damaged but largely intact despite the fire.
Flight disruptions ensued with approximately 250 flights delayed at the airport later in the day, as reported by FlightAware. The National Transportation Safety Board announced the dispatch of an investigative team led by Chair Jennifer Homendy to examine the incident. Amazon expressed its cooperation with the investigation, extending condolences to the affected families and individuals involved in the tragic event.
Witnesses like Jackson Lee, who observed the aftermath from a nearby electronics shop, expressed shock at the proximity of the crash to their location, emphasizing the unexpected nature of the incident near the airport’s perimeter.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident, while authorities and aviation experts work to understand the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
