“Experts Forecast Increase in Flying Ants Across UK”

Date:

Experts predict a forthcoming increase in airborne ants due to favorable intermittent wet and mild weather conditions across the UK. Known as Flying Ant Day, this annual event sees a large number of winged ants engaging in synchronized mating flights over several days or even weeks.

This year’s phenomenon is anticipated to occur earlier and with greater intensity than previous years, as indicated by specialists at Best Ants UK. The Natural History Museum explains that these flying ants are known as alates and are typically the sexually mature queens and males of the black garden ant species, Lasius niger, with queens reaching sizes of up to 15 millimeters.

In urban areas in the UK, these winged ants are commonly observed, with the larger ones being the queens. The urban heat island effect likely prompts ants to take flight earlier in cities compared to rural areas due to warmer temperatures. Swarms typically initiate in southern regions like Cornwall and Kent before spreading northward across the country.
