A Vancouver ex-band teacher has been permanently barred from teaching after admitting to sexually assaulting a student. Robert Kyle Ledingham will not have the opportunity to seek a teaching certificate in British Columbia again following his guilty plea to a sexual assault charge in May 2024. The BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation revealed that Ledingham, a certified teacher since May 2008, had faced initial accusations of two counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault in September 2020.
The complaint outlined incidents involving a student who volunteered at a high school within the Vancouver School District where Ledingham instructed the high school band between April and June 2019. The student, whose identity remains protected by a court-ordered publication ban, attended a different high school from the one where Ledingham taught.
Ledingham conceded to one count of sexual assault in May 2024, resulting in the other charges being dropped as part of the agreement. He received a 15-month conditional sentence, one condition being a prohibition from seeking employment in roles involving authority over individuals under 18. The Vancouver School District terminated Ledingham’s employment in November 2024 following the incident.
Acknowledging his actions as professional misconduct, the former band teacher agreed in the consent agreement that he is permanently ineligible to apply for a teaching certificate.
