“England Introduces New Recycling Regulations to Tackle Waste”

Date:

Households in England are being advised to stay informed about new waste disposal regulations related to recycling to prevent their rubbish from being left uncollected. The Simpler Recycling reforms in the UK, enacted through the Environment Act 2021, now mandate consistent recycling practices for both businesses and households across England. This entails the necessity for separate collections of food waste, paper and card, glass, metal, and plastic materials.

Under the new regulations, local authorities are required to offer clear guidance on recyclable and non-recyclable items, with certain councils exempt from these rules until at least 2040. It is crucial for residents to verify if these guidelines apply in their area by contacting their local council.

Councils have been granted the authority to determine the collection methods for metal, glass, and plastic items. The government is encouraging councils to collect metal lids and caps along with the corresponding glass containers. It is recommended that lids and caps remain on jars and bottles when placed in recycling bins, after ensuring they are rinsed clean of any food or liquid residues.

Recycle Now has issued guidelines on glass recycling, emphasizing the importance of rinsing containers and keeping lids and caps intact to prevent losses during the sorting process. For glass recycling at bottle banks, blue glass should be deposited alongside green glass.

The recent bin regulations have also brought about alterations in the recyclability of certain bathroom items. Always verify with the local council regarding the applicability of these rules in your vicinity. The updated guidelines specify that councils are not obligated to recycle absorbent hygiene products like nappies, period products, and incontinence items.

Certain items such as cotton wool, makeup pads, tissues, wet wipes, and toilet paper have also been deemed non-recyclable. Mirrors cannot be recycled at home and should be taken to a recycling center for proper disposal.
