Date:

Emma Raducanu was forced to retire from her match against Ann Li in Wuhan after receiving a medical examination by the WTA physio and tournament doctor. The 22-year-old had to withdraw due to health reasons.

During the match, where Raducanu was trailing 6-1, 4-1 against Ann Li, her opponent expressed concern for her well-being, wishing her a speedy recovery. Raducanu had initially shown promise by breaking her opponent in the opening game but later struggled and appeared to be unwell, requiring medical attention.

Ann Li went on to dominate the match, winning six consecutive games as Raducanu faced challenges with the humid and hot playing conditions. Commentators noted that Raducanu should have sought assistance earlier in the match. Raducanu’s withdrawal adds to the list of recent player retirements in tennis events, with concerns raised about the demanding tournament schedules.

Ahead of her debut at the Wuhan Open, Raducanu reflected on her recent defeats, expressing disappointment over losing matches she had been close to winning. Despite these setbacks, she remains focused on achieving a seeded position at the Australian Open as part of her upcoming goals.
