Despite being edged out in a thrilling sprint finish last year, McColgan is eager to improve her performance in this edition of the half marathon course from Newcastle to South Shields. Although she faced setbacks due to injuries in recent years, the 34-year-old athlete, who previously secured Commonwealth 10,000m gold, successfully made her marathon debut in London in April, breaking her mother’s Scottish record. McColgan views the Great North Run as vital preparation for her upcoming marathon endeavor in New York in November.
