“David Lammy Urges MPs to Uphold Hillsborough Bill Integrity”

Date:

David Lammy has urged Members of Parliament not to dilute the Hillsborough Bill and to expedite its passage into law. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining the legislation in its current robust state to prevent injustices from being concealed. The bill, which aims to prevent state cover-ups, will be deliberated and voted on in the Commons for the first time on Monday.

This significant legislation is a result of the prolonged struggle for justice by the families of the 97 Liverpool football fans who tragically lost their lives in a crush during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final. Mr. Lammy, who also serves as Justice Secretary, praised the resilience of the families and victims of various British tragedies, including Hillsborough and Grenfell, for persevering despite facing immense loss and obstacles.

The government introduced the Public Office (Accountability) Bill, known as the Hillsborough law, in September, with a commitment from Keir Starmer to uphold its strength without compromise. The bill establishes a legal duty of candour for public officials, including police officers, with penalties for dishonesty. It also aims to streamline access to legal aid, ending the disparity in legal representation.

Victims have expressed frustration at the lack of transparency and truth in previous dealings, citing cover-ups and a protective system that shields wrongdoers. Families affected by the Hillsborough tragedy have fought for justice for years, culminating in the quashing of initial inquest results in 2016 and the acknowledgement of unlawful killings.

The Hillsborough Bill has garnered support from victims of other tragedies, such as the Grenfell Tower fire and the Post Office Horizon IT scandal. Following today’s second reading in the Commons, the bill will undergo parliamentary processes before reaching the House of Lords. The government aims to secure Royal Assent for the legislation by spring 2026, ensuring easier access to legal representation for families facing state entities.

Mr. Lammy highlighted the necessity of truth, accountability, and dignity for grieving families, drawing parallels between various tragedies. He emphasized the importance of delivering on promises to provide justice and support to those affected by state failures and injustices.
