Residents in two towns in southwest Manitoba are expressing frustration over the hazardous conditions of a local highway, citing massive potholes and sections of missing pavement as key concerns. Highway 41, located in Ellice-Archie, connects McAuley, St-Lazare, and Binscarth, posing significant dangers to drivers, as highlighted by Ellice-Archie Reeve Barry Lowes.
Lowes recounted damaging his truck’s rim near McAuley while en route to his granddaughter’s graduation, emphasizing the perilous conditions caused by the deteriorating road surface. The highway’s state has worsened over the past decade due to historic flooding incidents in 2011 and 2014, which submerged several portions of the road.
Despite its poor condition, the highway sees heavy traffic from farmers, truckers, and campers. Lowes, who regularly transports bulls across Manitoba, stressed the extreme disrepair of Highway 41 compared to other roads in the area, noting numerous potholes and missing pavement sections marked by pink and white paint.
One particularly problematic segment, located approximately 15 kilometers south of McAuley, features broken pavement and holes in both lanes, prompting drivers to veer onto gravel shoulders to avoid the damaged areas. Lowes has persistently urged the government to address the road’s condition, having raised the issue with Manitoba Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor during her visit to the rural municipality.
While maintenance crews are currently patching up the highway, locals like Dolores Fouillard in St-Lazare are calling for a more permanent solution beyond temporary fixes. Fouillard emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive road overhaul, expressing concerns about the safety of commuters, especially with the increased traffic flow from neighboring areas like Rocanville, Saskatchewan.
As the highway continues to deteriorate, residents fear for the safety of schoolchildren and commuters using the road daily. Fouillard stressed the critical need for immediate action to prevent potential accidents and ensure the well-being of all road users traversing Highway 41 in southwestern Manitoba.
