A non-profit organization with religious affiliations, established by an American Christian singer, is taking legal action against the city of Moncton. The dispute arose after permits were revoked last July for a concert by Sean Feucht that was set to occur in a public park along the riverfront.
Burn 24/7 Canada, the non-profit founded by Feucht, lodged a notice of action in Moncton court on Aug. 4, claiming that the city’s cancellation of the “musical worship show” violated the organization’s freedom of expression rights. The organization argued that these actions infringed upon fundamental civil liberties crucial to Canadian democracy and resulted in significant harm.
Alleging that the cancellation breached rights outlined in section 2(b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Burn 24/7 Canada seeks to challenge the legality of the city’s decision. Feucht, known as a Christian missionary and musician, has been a controversial figure due to his outspoken views on various social issues.
The organization’s lawsuit asserts that the cancellation of the Moncton concert was unjustified, attributing it to the perceived conservative Christian values and public support expressed by Feucht. Despite these claims, the city has refrained from commenting on the matter, citing its pending legal status.
Feucht’s organization has faced similar cancellations in other Canadian cities, prompting legal action in Quebec City last year. Burn 24/7 Canada is seeking $50,000 in damages for the Moncton cancellation, highlighting the financial losses incurred due to the relocation of the event.
The lawsuit also details the extensive communication and compliance efforts made by the organization with the city’s requirements leading up to the event’s approval. Burn 24/7 Canada maintains that it adhered to all stipulated conditions, including providing necessary documentation and security measures for the concert.
The dispute remains unresolved as the legal proceedings progress, with the organization emphasizing the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression for all individuals, regardless of controversial viewpoints.
