Child of Wanted Criminal Aims Gun at Police in NZ

Date:

In a tense confrontation, the offspring of a wanted criminal brandished a firearm at law enforcement officers during a police operation in a secluded campsite where the fugitive had been eluding capture, authorities disclosed. The child, identified as Maverick Phillips, aged 10, aimed the weapon at specialized police personnel as they closed in on the hideout where the Phillips family had been hiding in Waikato, New Zealand.

The discovery of the children and the campsite followed a violent clash between Tom Phillips, the father, and law enforcement officers, resulting in one officer sustaining critical injuries and the father of three being fatally wounded.

A team of expert negotiators was deployed to the scene to defuse the situation with Maverick and his nine-year-old sister, Ember, after their older sister Jayda assisted the police in locating the camp. Eventually, the children agreed to vacate the site without any shots being fired, according to Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders.

Jayda, aged 12, played a crucial role in the police operation by aiding authorities in finding the campsite and notifying them about the children’s access to firearms.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Richard Chambers confirmed the presence of a firearm at the campsite, emphasizing the significant assistance provided by Jayda in facilitating communication with Maverick and Ember without causing alarm.

Investigators are currently probing how the family managed to evade detection for an extended period, suggesting the possibility of external assistance. Images released depict a makeshift campsite littered with soda cans, cooking utensils, and scattered tires, indicating a temporary settlement.

Law enforcement officials disclosed that the area where the children were located had been previously searched, indicating a close proximity to the fugitive family.

Tom Phillips went missing in December 2021, prompting a reward of $80,000 (£35,000) for information leading to their whereabouts, which yielded no leads.

Detective Saunders highlighted the involvement of accomplices in aiding Phillips, who has been portrayed in conflicting lights within New Zealand society, ranging from a Robin Hood-like figure to a criminal. The fugitive’s confrontation with his children’s mother culminated in their disappearance into the rugged wilderness of New Zealand.

Commissioner Chambers unequivocally dismissed any heroic depiction of Phillips, emphasizing that his actions, including endangering children and law enforcement officers, disqualify him from being hailed as a hero.
