After the closure of the Michael Donovan Public Library at Waterford Valley Mall, efforts to relocate the library in the west end of St. John’s have faced challenges. Despite the lack of submissions in response to a provincial government tender for a new location, Josh Smee, vice-chair of Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, remains optimistic about finding a new spot soon.
Expressing disappointment over the situation, Smee highlighted the library’s popularity among patrons despite its small size. He emphasized the importance of reopening the library promptly in the west end and urged potential landlords to participate in the process, underscoring the community’s strong attachment to the library.
Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson Janelle Simms mentioned ongoing consultations with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next steps, reaffirming the commitment to keep the library in the west end. Smee echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the community’s love for the library and the dedicated work of the staff.
Library patron Juanette Anthony shared her experience of missing the library, particularly valuing its computer access. She expressed a desire for the library to reopen in the same area but in a larger space with enhanced resources, emphasizing her love for books and the utility of the library in her daily life.
As stakeholders navigate the process of finding a new home for the library, the community eagerly anticipates a successful resolution in the upcoming rounds of tendering, underscoring the cherished role of the library in the neighborhood.
