“Canadian Petition to Expel U.S. Ambassador Gains Momentum”

Date:

The initiator of a petition urging for the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra from Canada is amazed by the overwhelming support it has garnered. The online petition demands that Hoekstra be declared persona non grata and urges the Canadian government to seek his removal as the U.S. ambassador to Canada.

Surpassing 70,000 signatures by Wednesday evening, the petition’s signatories had doubled within 24 hours, exceeding the expectations of Lee Walker, the individual from Calgary spearheading the petition. Walker expressed that the significant response indicates a widespread discomfort among many Canadians with Hoekstra’s alignment with President Trump’s viewpoints on Canadian sovereignty.

Accusing Hoekstra of jeopardizing the Canada-U.S. diplomatic ties by interfering in Canadian politics and making controversial statements, the petition highlights Hoekstra’s suggestion that Canada’s annexation by the U.S. would be a valid topic of discussion. Walker emphasized that such rhetoric from an ambassador could have serious implications and should not be normalized.

Moreover, the petition calls on the Liberal government to initiate a review of U.S. diplomatic involvement in Canadian matters. When questioned about the potential impact on trade talks between the U.S. and Canada, Walker pointed out the existing tension between the two nations, emphasizing the need to uphold respect for Canada’s sovereignty.

Negotiations between Canadian and American officials are ongoing to reach a trade agreement before the looming threat of increased tariffs on Canadian goods by President Trump. The petition is scheduled to be presented in Parliament by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May later this year, aiming to convey a strong message about the need for accountability in diplomatic conduct.
