Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has announced the safe discovery of one Canadian citizen or permanent resident out of the 30 individuals who went missing in the aftermath of devastating floods in the border area between Nepal and China. This person had been unreachable due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.
The flash flooding occurred a week ago following the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayan border region shared by Nepal and China. The calamity resulted in significant damage and loss of life, with over 1,100 fatalities and more than 3,900 people still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has reported that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are also missing.
Anand confirmed that Canada will be dispatching over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region, in addition to the $5 million in humanitarian assistance already pledged by Ottawa. The efforts aim to support the ongoing rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected area.
