While anticipation builds for the upcoming World Athletics Ultimate Championship, this week’s Diamond League Final presents significant opportunities for athletes, including a trio of Canadians. Sprinter Audrey Leduc, middle-distance runner Marco Arop, and shot put athlete Sarah Mitton will vie for victory and a $30,000 top prize in their respective events in Brussels on Friday.
Teammate Andre De Grasse, initially slated for the men’s 200 meters in Belgium on Saturday, withdrew due to a personal commitment. Most competitors qualified through the Road to the Final series held across four continents from April to August, with 40 current world and Olympic champions set to compete at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme meet.
Mitton, aiming for her second Diamond League Trophy in three years, aims to redeem her disqualification from last year’s event. Arop, who finished third in the previous edition, looks to make his mark healthy and well-rested after recent successes.
Leduc, making her Diamond League debut this season, secured her spot in the women’s 200 meters with a strong showing in Rabat, Morocco. Additionally, a win in Brussels could grant Arop or Leduc a spot in the lucrative World Athletics Ultimate Championship, although Mitton won’t have the same opportunity in the women’s shot put category.
The event will also feature renowned international athletes, including Julien Alfred, Sha’Carri Richardson, Soufiane El Bakkali, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Meanwhile, the men’s one-hour race was canceled due to an injury to Frenchman Jimmy Gressier, who aimed to break a world record at the event.
