Date:

Canada’s women’s volleyball team secured a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after triumphing over the Dominican Republic in the championship match of the NORCECA Continental Qualifier. The top-ranked Canadian team, led by coach Giovanni Guidetti and assistants Carolyn O’Dwyer, Vincenzo Mallia, and TJ Sanders, emerged victorious in a four-game final against the fourth-ranked Dominican Republic squad, with scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14. This victory in the best-of-five final marked Canada’s perfect 5-0 record in the qualifying tournament.

This achievement marks Canada’s fourth Olympic appearance and first since 1996 when they tied for ninth place in Atlanta. Alexa Gray, a key player on the team, expressed her elation at the victory, highlighting the team’s journey since her debut in 2017 and the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the previous qualification. Gray emphasized her pride in representing Canada and the team’s resilience.

In the match, Gray and Kiera Van Ryk led Canada’s scoring with 22 points each. Despite a spirited performance by the Dominican Republic, Canada dominated in attack points, blocks, and aces. Setter Brie Fransen commended the team’s hard work and expressed her joy at achieving their goal.

Prior to securing the Olympic berth, Canada clinched its first NORCECA Continental Championship by defeating the Americans in the final. Coach Guidetti lauded the team’s dedication and success in achieving their season goals of reaching the VNL finals and qualifying for the Olympics, expressing his immense satisfaction with their accomplishments.
