“Canada’s Women’s Basketball Team Gears Up for Olympic Qualifier after World Cup Exit”

Date:

Canada’s national women’s basketball team faced a setback just before the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement was finalized to welcome the country’s first WNBA team. The team was eliminated from World Cup contention by the Australian squad led by Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello. Despite the disappointment, Brondello acknowledged Canada’s potential with young talents like the Swords sisters and players emerging from the college system.

Following this defeat, the WNBA will pause for two-and-a-half weeks to allow players to participate in the World Cup, which Canada will miss out on despite a strong performance in the 2022 event. However, Canada secured a spot in a 2028 Olympic qualifier after dominating a pre-qualifying tournament by defeating Mexico 83-53.

The tournament MVP, Syla Swords, showcased her skills alongside other young talents, impressing head coach Nell Fortner. The team’s mix of veterans and younger players proved successful in the tournament, setting Canada up for future success.

While not competing at the World Cup was disappointing, Fortner emphasized the importance of the team’s commitment and achievements. With a focus on developing young talents like Swords, Canada aims to build a strong foundation for future competitions.

Looking ahead, Canada plans to prepare for the Los Angeles Olympics with a training camp next February and participation in the FIBA AmeriCup in El Salvador. Despite setbacks, Canada’s women’s basketball program shows promise for future success on the international stage.
