Canada’s male and female teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships held in Germany. The men’s team, with a 2-1 record, secured a spot despite a 37-28 loss to Japan. Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal, they were granted a win. Japan’s Take Taniguchi threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s Michael O’Connor threw three. The men will now face American Samoa in the quarterfinals after American Samoa’s victory over the U.S.
On the other hand, the women’s team finished first in their group with a flawless 3-0 record following a 34-20 win against Japan. They are set to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a potential semifinal match against the winner of Mexico and Spain. Sara Parker, the team’s quarterback, delivered four touchdown passes against Japan, two of which went to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Additionally, Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau also contributed to the team’s victory.
Aside from the championship title, teams are aiming for a chance to enter the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The top two teams from the championships will secure Olympic spots as flag football makes its Olympic debut. Fans can catch all the matches live-streamed on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
