“Canada Boosts Search & Rescue Teams with $3M Funding”

Date:

The federal government of Canada has unveiled a multi-million-dollar initiative to bolster search and rescue volunteer teams across the country. Eleanor Olszewski, the minister of emergency management and community resilience, disclosed the $3 million three-year funding agreement with the Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada (SARVAC) in Yellowknife. This funding will allocate $1 million annually to support the numerous ground search and rescue teams in Canada, which collectively involve approximately 10,000 volunteers.

The announcement, delivered by Minister Olszewski, followed a visit to Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk alongside Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty. Olszewski emphasized the critical role of search and rescue operations, especially in remote regions with challenging terrains and vast territories. She stressed the significance of local knowledge and swift responses in life-threatening situations.

The federal funding will be channeled towards enhancing national ground search and rescue standards, as well as establishing a national volunteer insurance program. Bill Peck, representing SARVAC in the N.W.T., highlighted the substantial impact of this investment on the national volunteer organization. He underlined the importance of stability and long-term planning to ensure consistent support for search and rescue efforts.

In the 2024-25 period, volunteers across the network participated in over 2,900 searches, dedicating more than 222,000 volunteer hours to search operations. Peck emphasized the unique challenges faced by northern and remote regions, such as vast distances, isolated communities, and extreme environments. He reiterated the indispensable role of volunteers and emphasized that the funding would enhance their responsiveness during emergencies.

The allocated funds will also support the maintenance of the e-learning platform and the AdventureSmart Program, an educational initiative aimed at search and rescue prevention, which is facilitated by volunteers. Peck underscored the pivotal role of strong national coordination in search and rescue efforts, particularly in regions like the Northwest Territories.
