British Survivor Exposes Dubai Prison Horrors

Date:

A young British woman named Mia O’Brien recently faced a life sentence in the infamous Al-Awir prison in Dubai after being caught with cocaine in her apartment. David Haigh, a former Leeds United Football Club managing director, who spent 22 months jailed in the United Arab Emirates, shared his experiences of the harsh conditions in Dubai prisons.

Haigh recounted being subjected to violence and torture, including witnessing the mistreatment of other inmates. He described overcrowded cells, unsanitary conditions, and the prevalence of tuberculosis among prisoners. Haigh highlighted the lack of basic amenities like proper toilets and the physical repercussions he still endures from his time in custody.

Despite being acquitted on separate charges in 2016, Haigh maintains his innocence regarding the fraud allegations. He now advocates for justice reform and reflects on the stark contrast between Dubai’s glamorous image and the harsh reality he experienced during his imprisonment.

Following his release, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed their active involvement in monitoring Haigh’s welfare during his detention and addressing his mistreatment claims with UAE authorities. They emphasized their commitment to addressing concerns of mistreatment with consent from the individuals involved.
