A loggerhead turtle named ‘Barnacle Bill’ that was stranded in Guernsey for almost two years due to Brexit-related paperwork issues is finally on her way back to the wild near the Azores. The Guernsey Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) recently announced the exciting news of Barnacle Bill’s imminent release.
Barnacle Bill, a young female turtle from Gran Canaria, was rescued by the GSPCA after being found covered in barnacles and severely underweight. Despite efforts to repatriate her earlier, complications arising from Brexit and the need for special health certificates delayed her return to warmer waters.
The GSPCA team is overjoyed that Barnacle Bill, now weighing over 13kg compared to less than 1kg at rescue, is finally fit to be released back into her natural habitat near the Azores. She is currently en route to Horta for her release.
After facing challenges with paperwork and transportation, a successful collaboration between the GSPCA, Sea Life Brighton, and Condor Ferries ensured Barnacle Bill’s transfer to the repatriation center.
