Massive flash floods struck a border region between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic loss of over 160 lives and leaving numerous individuals unaccounted for, including 24 Canadians. Nepalese authorities confirmed 162 fatalities, while China’s state media reported at least three deaths and over 558 missing persons in Tibet’s Gyirong county as of early Thursday, with 260 of them being foreign nationals.
The devastating floods occurred when the Bhotekoshi River overflowed around 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday, causing destruction to villages, roads, and hydropower projects in Nepal. In response, the Nepali government issued warnings to residents in various districts to steer clear of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani riverbanks. Seeking assistance, Nepal reached out to both India and China for rescue efforts.
Sunil Sharma from the Nepal Tourism Board disclosed that 403 individuals, including 341 foreigners, were reported missing, among them 24 Canadians. Following this, Nepal’s ambassador to Canada corroborated the information regarding the Canadian citizens. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow over the flash floods and urged all Canadians in the area to register with the ROCA system promptly for support.
Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the impact on Canadians by the floods and mentioned challenges in communication due to power outages. Security footage from the Chinese side of the border captured people fleeing before the disaster struck, with Sharma highlighting that pilgrims to Mount Kailash in Tibet were among the missing.
Efforts are underway for rescue and relief operations, with UN teams mobilizing support in Nepal and Chinese President Xi Jinping directing intensified search and rescue operations in Gyirong. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended assistance to Nepal and assured close coordination on relief efforts.
The affected areas, previously hit by similar flash floods, face challenges compounded by climate change. Experts believe that an ice rock avalanche triggered by a glacier likely caused the recent flash flood, emphasizing the need for early warning systems in the Himalayan region. The region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events underscores the urgency for climate adaptation measures.
