The Toronto Blue Jays will honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently ended his career after announcing over 4,000 games, has been a pivotal figure in the organization for almost four decades, serving as a player, manager, and commentator.
Expressing his gratitude, Martinez acknowledged the Jays fans for their warm reception and for making him feel like part of their families. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases such as “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez revealed that these lines evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010, inspired by his time in Milwaukee.
Reflecting on his transition into retirement, Martinez highlighted the significant change after being actively involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, Martinez had to step back due to health concerns, having battled cancer for the second time in 2025 (initially diagnosed in 2022). He happily shared that he is now cancer-free and in good health.
The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who have shaped the franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Notably, all 11 current members on the team’s Level of Excellence will be included in this tribute.
Having previously felt apprehensive about joining the Blue Jays in 1981, Martinez shared how he initially perceived his move to Toronto as an “exile.” However, he soon realized the city’s passion for baseball and the team, describing Toronto as a special destination. Reflecting on the recent World Series, Martinez praised the exceptional Game 7 and the team’s chemistry, emphasizing the unforgettable experience.
Martinez also commented on the challenges faced by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. during a tough season for the Jays, highlighting the game’s inherent difficulty even for top players.
