“Autumn Budget Speculations: Tax Hikes, Energy Bills, Interest Rates”

Date:

Rachel Reeves is gearing up to present her Autumn Budget in the coming month, amidst increasing speculation about potential new tax hikes that the Chancellor may announce.

Simultaneously, an upcoming winter program offering £25 payments during temperature drops will be launched, and Ofgem is expected to reveal whether energy bills will see another increase this winter.

Additionally, the Office for National Statistics will provide the latest inflation update, and the Bank of England will convene to determine a potential interest rate cut. Here’s what you should keep an eye on.

To receive money through the Cold Weather Payment scheme, qualifying households must be recipients of specific DWP benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, or Universal Credit when temperatures fall below zero for seven consecutive days starting November 1.

In Scotland, the Cold Weather Payments have been replaced by the Winter Heating Payment, valued at £59.75.

On November 6, the Bank of England will announce its next interest rate decision, which currently stands at 4%, after being maintained at this level during the September 2025 meeting.

Inflation data for the 12 months leading up to October 2025 will be disclosed by the Office for National Statistics on November 19, with the current inflation rate at 3.8%, significantly above the Bank of England’s 2% target.

Ofgem is set to unveil the new energy price cap by November 25, applicable from January 1 to March 31, with the current average dual fuel household cap set at £1,755 annually for those paying by direct debit.

As for Rachel Reeves, her Autumn Budget presentation on November 26 remains shrouded in mystery, although rumors suggest a potential Income Tax rise, challenging a crucial Labour election promise.

While tax increases are not confirmed, reports hint at a probable rise in the base rate from 20% to 22%, along with considerations to halve the cash ISA limit and modify Inheritance Tax gifting rules.

Lastly, Black Friday falls on November 28 and Cyber Monday on December 1, but deals may surface earlier. Before making any purchases, it’s advisable to compare prices online using platforms like Price Spy, Idealo, and CamelCamelCamel to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
