“Atari Partners with Activision to Reintroduce Classic Games on Physical Cartridges”

Date:

Atari, a prominent name in the gaming industry, is revisiting its roots by reintroducing classic 1980s games in physical form. During the recent Gamescom event in Germany, Atari Interactive partnered with Activision to launch 39 games from Activision’s early days on physical cartridges, including popular titles like “Pitfall,” “River Raid,” and “Megamania.”

These games are compatible with the Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original 2600 console released in 1977. The updated console features wireless joysticks and HDMI connectivity for modern TVs. In 2023, the 2600+ was unveiled along with re-releases of iconic games such as “Pac-Man,” “Galaga,” and “Dig Dug.” It also supports original cartridges from Atari’s 2600 and 7800 consoles, offering backward compatibility for those who still have the vintage hardware.

Mike Mika, the studio head at Digital Eclipse, expressed that there is a continued demand for these classic games, especially among enthusiasts who have preserved their old games over the years. The collaboration with Activision holds significance as it marks a reunion after more than four decades. Activision, founded in 1979 by former Atari programmers, is now part of Microsoft and known for popular franchises like “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush Saga.”

Atari, which has undergone ownership changes over the years, has recently focused on retro gaming and reconnecting with its traditional audience. The company acquired studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse and launched the Atari 2600+ console, along with accessories like joysticks and paddle controllers. The brand’s revival efforts have been well-received by retro Atari fans, with initiatives like the Atari 50 compilation and collaborations with original Atari artists.

The trend towards physical media in gaming is gaining traction, as seen with Atari’s emphasis on providing an authentic retro gaming experience with physical cartridges, box art, manuals, and collectible patches. This approach contrasts with the shift towards digital-only releases in the gaming industry, with some players expressing a preference for tangible gaming experiences.

Atari’s rekindled focus on physical games and hardware resonates with a new generation that values the tactile experience of owning and playing classic games. The enduring appeal of Atari’s retro releases reflects a growing interest in preserving gaming history and enjoying the nostalgia of vintage gameplay experiences.
