Algoma Steel’s Electric Arc Furnace Shut Down by Power Outage

Date:

Algoma Steel’s electric arc furnace (EAF) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is currently not operational due to a power outage. The company reported that the furnace was automatically shut down upon detecting an irregularity, likely stemming from a turbine issue at the Lake Superior Generating Station.

In an email to CBC News, the company stated, “With repair work in progress, we have decided to bring forward a maintenance outage originally scheduled for later this quarter. Combining both tasks will minimize total downtime throughout the year and enhance our position when operations resume.”

Algoma Steel anticipates that the outage may extend up to 21 days. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), responsible for overseeing Ontario’s power grid, is collaborating with Algoma Steel to explore potential temporary power solutions following the unexpected generator loss.

Despite the EAF shutdown, Algoma Steel assures that its finishing operations will proceed as usual without any anticipated disruptions to customer orders.
