Aldi has once again been named the most affordable supermarket in the UK, according to the latest price analysis by Which? In September, the average cost for a basket of 71 items at Aldi was £122.77, making it £1.18 cheaper than Lidl, where the same items totaled £123.95 on average.
Which? conducts monthly comparisons of popular grocery items at the eight largest supermarkets in the UK. The analysis considers regular prices, discounts, and loyalty program benefits, excluding bulk purchase discounts.
In the recent review, none of the 71 items studied were cheaper for Lidl Plus members. The selection of items included both branded and own-label products such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
Tesco secured the third spot in the rankings. Clubcard holders paid an average of £135.64, while non-members spent £138.66 for the same items at Tesco.
During September, Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders paid an average of £138.74, whereas non-cardholders spent £142.70 on the identical items at Sainsbury’s.
Which? also evaluates a broader list of 186 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their narrower product range. Asda emerged as the most economical option with an average bill of £465.66, beating Tesco with a Clubcard, where the same basket cost £472.45.
On the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose was the priciest option, with an average cost of £161.19 for a small shop and a staggering £531.39 for a larger purchase.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the findings, highlighting Aldi’s consistent affordability and Asda’s competitiveness in offering lower prices compared to other major retailers.
Given the rising food prices and cooling weather, households are advised to compare prices across supermarkets as potential savings of up to 36% can be achieved by opting for a more cost-effective shopping destination.
