Labour’s top official on policing has expressed interest in considering the idea of blunting the ends of knives to prevent fatal stabbings, a proposal put forward by actor Idris Elba. Sarah Jones, speaking to The Mirror, described the concept of removing sharp knife tips as intriguing, citing evidence suggesting it could have a significant impact.
Jones also noted that knife arches in schools could serve as a valuable tool, but emphasized that the decision to implement them rests with school leaders. Following the tragic loss of their son Harvey Willgoose to murder, his parents have advocated for the installation of arches in all secondary schools and colleges.
Highlighting progress in addressing knife crime, Jones mentioned the government’s efforts to fulfill its commitment to halve knife-related incidents over a decade, pointing to recent data indicating a decline in cases.
Advocates, including Idris Elba, have called for the adoption of rounded knife tips, arguing that it is still feasible to use knives for cutting without pointed ends. Jones expressed readiness to engage with manufacturers on implementing such measures among various strategies in place.
While acknowledging the focus on enhancing police powers, Jones welcomed the discussion on alternative approaches. She also recognized the usefulness of knife arches, particularly in conjunction with plain clothes policing, to identify potential individuals carrying knives.
The call for widespread deployment of knife arches gained momentum following the tragic death of Harvey, with his mother Caroline underscoring the potential lifesaving impact of such preventive measures. Despite the positive trend in reduced knife-related offenses, Jones stressed the ongoing commitment to combat knife crime vigorously.
The decline in knife-related crimes and homicides was attributed to targeted policing efforts, increased law enforcement presence, and stricter regulations on knife sales. Jones emphasized the collective effort to safeguard communities and save lives through coordinated actions.
While acknowledging progress, Jones emphasized the need for sustained and intensified efforts to achieve the goal of halving knife crime within a decade. She highlighted interdepartmental collaboration to prevent youth involvement in violence, especially after substantial cuts to youth services.
Emphasizing the importance of holistic approaches, Jones underscored the need for cohesive actions across various sectors, including enhanced support services and proactive measures in schools, to effectively address the underlying factors contributing to violence among young people.
