Aldi has regained its title as the most affordable supermarket in the UK, surpassing Lidl this month. According to the latest supermarket price analysis by Which?, a shopping list comprising 75 items cost an average of £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025. This was 38p cheaper than the same list at Lidl, which totaled £128.30 on average with its loyalty program Lidl Plus.
In July, Lidl held the top spot for affordability but now ranks second. The comparison included a mix of branded and own-brand items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
Tesco Clubcard members spent an average of £142.36, while those without a Clubcard paid £145.01 for the same items. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent £144.75 on average, while non-cardholders paid £149.02.
Asda remains the most budget-friendly supermarket this month for a larger list of 190 items. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their smaller product ranges. Asda’s larger shopping list averaged £474.86, cheaper than Tesco with a Clubcard by £11.03.
Waitrose was the priciest option for both small and large shopping lists, with the smaller list costing £172.61 and the larger one totaling £548.14.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, noted, “Aldi is once again the UK’s most economical supermarket in August, offering great value without membership prices. Asda stands out as the cheapest non-discounter supermarket for larger grocery hauls, outpricing Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.”
Sewraz added, “As household expenses rise with cooling weather, there are potential savings for those who compare prices. Simply opting for one supermarket over another could yield savings of up to 35%.”
