Larry Summers, the creator of ChatGPT, has resigned from his position at OpenAI following the surfacing of his emails with the late convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The decision to step down came after it was revealed that Summers maintained a close relationship with Epstein even after his conviction in 2008. In a statement, the OpenAI board acknowledged Summers’ resignation, expressing appreciation for his past contributions and unique perspectives.
The announcement of Summers’ departure came shortly after he had indicated his intention to reduce his public commitments. In a statement released through his spokesperson Kelly Friendly, Summers confirmed his resignation from the OpenAI board, citing his earlier decision to step back from public engagements.
Summers, who joined the OpenAI board in November 2023 to assist in stabilizing the organization and reinstating CEO Sam Altman, expressed gratitude for his time with the company and voiced optimism for its future progress. Prior to his involvement with OpenAI, Summers had held prominent positions such as treasury secretary under former President Bill Clinton and president of Harvard University.
