UK PM Starmer Leads Largest Trade Mission to India, Faces Putin Oil Dispute

Date:

Just moments before departure to India, the pilot amusingly mimicked the Commons Speaker to introduce a special guest to the passengers. Using phrases like “Order, order, order,” he grabbed everyone’s attention.

Soon after, the voice of Keir Starmer resonated throughout the British Airways aircraft. Identifying himself as the Prime Minister, he warmly welcomed everyone aboard BA flight 9100 bound for Mumbai. Highlighting the significance of the journey, he mentioned that it marked the largest trade mission to India ever organized by the UK.

Expressing eagerness to collaborate and explore opportunities arising from the new free trade agreement, Mr. Starmer assured a safe flight and promised further updates post-takeoff.

The flight to Mumbai accommodated 125 prominent figures including CEOs, university leaders, and cultural institution heads, all set for a mission to enhance relations with the Indian government under Narendra Modi.

Mr. Starmer’s primary focus during the visit was to champion British businesses and promote the UK-India trade deal forged during the summer at Chequers, which Boris Johnson had previously struggled to secure.

Furthermore, the trip served as a pivotal moment for the government to mend ties with companies after discord stemming from the previous year’s Budget tax adjustments.

With Modi’s efforts to ensure a warm reception for Mr. Starmer, the visit to Mumbai, his maiden trip to India, was met with grandeur. The city was adorned with billboards featuring both leaders, and a vibrant welcome party of musicians and performers added to the festive atmosphere.

Despite the cordial relations, a significant point of contention between the two leaders was the purchase of discounted Russian oil by India, a resource linked to Putin’s actions in Ukraine. This issue was raised during private discussions between the PMs at Raj Bhavan and reiterated during a press conference at the British Deputy High Commission.

Modi, acknowledging the friendship with Mr. Starmer, celebrated the dynamic India-UK relationship as they attended the Global Fintech Fest together.

However, contrasting sentiments were evident as Modi extended birthday wishes to Putin shortly before Mr. Starmer’s visit, emphasizing the deep-rooted India-Russia ties. In response, Mr. Starmer clarified his stance on not sending birthday greetings to the Russian President, especially given the ongoing events involving Russia.

As the outbound journey commenced, Mr. Starmer addressed journalists to set the record straight regarding his stance on communicating with President Putin.
