“Brave Boy Shields Sister, Sustains Burns in Firework Incident”

Date:

An 11-year-old courageous boy sustained severe burns when he shielded his sister from a firework that was aimed at her during a local fireworks display in Penygarn, South Wales. The incident occurred when a firework misfired and headed towards the crowd where Olly, his sister Daisy, and brother Harri were positioned behind a barrier. Reacting swiftly, Olly pushed Daisy out of harm’s way, causing the firework to explode in the hood of his coat, resulting in burns to his neck, fingers, and head.

Olly’s mother, Charlotte, recounted the harrowing moment when the firework hit him, praising his selfless act of bravery. Following the incident, Olly was rushed to Grange University Hospital for treatment, with ongoing consultations with a burns unit at Morriston Hospital. The community expressed shock and trauma on social media, with some vowing never to attend fireworks displays again.

Despite being discharged from the hospital, Olly is recuperating at home and had to miss school due to his injuries, including his disappointment in not being able to play his bagpipes at an upcoming remembrance march. Described as a hero by his piping ensemble, Olly’s dedication and selflessness were commended, with plans for him to still participate in the event by laying a poppy wreath on behalf of the band.

While the physical wounds may heal, the emotional impact on Olly and his family lingers, leading them to reconsider attending such events in the future. Charlotte emphasized the importance of safety in such situations, reflecting on the unexpected turn of events despite attending an organized display.
