A 23-year-old refugee was fatally stabbed in a violent incident on a train, with police releasing disturbing footage of the attack.
Iryna Zarutska, who had fled Ukraine following the Russian invasion ordered by Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, sought refuge in Charlotte, North Carolina, leaving her family behind for a new life. Tragically, on August 22, while on the South End light rail train in Charlotte, Iryna was brutally attacked by a homeless man with a history of criminal behavior, who stabbed her in the neck. Surveillance cameras captured the chilling moment as the attacker, identified as Decarlos Brown Jr, stood up with a bloodied knife after the assault.
Despite emergency responders’ efforts, Iryna was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown, known for previous criminal activities, including assaulting his sister, was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with first-degree murder. His bail was denied by a judge, and he is currently in custody.
Described as a career criminal with a troubled past, Brown had previously served time for armed robbery and had a history of violent offenses. His latest arrest for the murder of Iryna Zarutska has shocked the community, prompting demands for increased safety measures on public transportation in the area.
The tragic incident has raised concerns among residents, with Councilman Edwin Peacock emphasizing the need for transparency and security improvements to restore public trust in using the light rail system.
