In recent times, QR codes have emerged as a highly beneficial innovation, revolutionizing the way tasks are carried out. These easily scannable black and white patterns are now prevalent, offering Android and iPhone users a quick means to access websites, download apps, sign in to streaming services, and make payments by simply pointing their phone cameras at them. Despite their time-saving advantages, QR codes also pose a risk, as there are numerous cases of individuals falling victim to counterfeit versions aimed at stealing personal information.
Although QR code attacks are not new, they are on the rise and becoming more sophisticated.
One of the newer fraudulent schemes targeting users is referred to as “brushing.” In this deceptive tactic, criminals dispatch unsolicited packages to homes containing a fake QR code. These packages typically arrive without sender information deliberately to pique curiosity. Recipients are then instructed to scan the code to discover the sender or return details, unwittingly exposing themselves to potential fraud.
Individuals who fall prey to this scam risk divulging sensitive personal data, which cybercriminals can exploit for monetary gain or additional fraudulent activities.
Research conducted by cybersecurity company NordVPN indicates a growing concern. The company estimates that over 26 million individuals may have been redirected to malicious websites through counterfeit QR codes.
“QR codes have evolved into an unsuspected avenue for cybercriminals. Unlike conventional phishing emails, where people have become adept at spotting red flags, a physical QR code often instills trust,” remarked Marijus Briedis, NordVPN’s Chief Technology Officer.
