Joey Mawson has been identified as the individual accused of sexually assaulting a nurse who worked for Michael Schumacher while at the Formula 1 champion’s residence in Gland, Switzerland. The Australian racer, aged 29, allegedly assaulted the woman while she was unconscious after a party at Schumacher’s mansion.
Mawson refutes the accusation, asserting that his relationship with the nurse was consensual and close, mentioning a previous encounter at a nightclub in Geneva. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Mawson was once seen as a rising star in Formula 1 but later shifted his focus back to racing in his home country.
Known to be a friend of Schumacher’s son, Mick, Mawson competed against notable figures in the sport like Lando Norris of McLaren and George Russell from Mercedes. A trial was set to commence this week, with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District of La Cote preparing a detailed indictment for the case.
Despite being a two-time champion in the Australian S5000 series, Mawson is currently banned from racing due to a doping scandal and failed to appear in court as scheduled. The trial was officially opened in his absence but postponed to a later date for further proceedings, as reported by The Sun.
It is important to note that none of the Schumacher family members are implicated in this legal matter. The Public Prosecutor’s Office’s indictment accuses Mawson of sexually assaulting the nurse after she had consumed vodka cocktails and was unconscious.
The nurse, who was a live-in caregiver for Schumacher following his skiing accident in 2013, reportedly lodged a criminal complaint over two years later, in January 2022. Allegedly, Mawson was present at Schumacher’s residence on the night of the incident, playing pool with other staff members before the assault took place.
